Publishing books has had a high barrier to many people for a long time. This is because publishing was considered to be the exclusive possession of intellectuals. It also contributed to the need for mass printing.
However, the paradigm began to change as company named bookk(부크크) provided POD(print-on-demand) services. The company overcomes the problem of mass printing by not selling pre-printed books, but printing and selling books when an order comes in.
Then, how easy is DIY publishing? I decided to simulate it.
First, I had to decide what to write for. Ironically, this is the most difficult part of DIY publishing. The process of publishing a book has become much easier, so I had to worry a lot about which topic to choose. Since there are no people to review and revise my manuscript in DIY publishing, the author has more to check.
After that, the procedure was very easy. Publishing was completed by setting the book type, design, and price and registering the ISBN. There was no part to verify the contents of the book in any process.
The cost aspect was interesting. The book production and registration process are free, but the publisher took about 60% of the sales revenue. You can discount the price of the book, but the publisher's revenue remains the same, and the author's revenue decreases. After setting the price, you can sell the book on the publisher's homepage.
As a result, it was possible to publish a book in 10 minutes if I had only a manuscript.
The Constitution of the Republic of Korea guarantees freedom of publication for all citizens. It would be nice that everyone could easily publish books. But we also have to think about the responsibilities that follow. On the other side of the globe, we see people suffering from malnutrition. But at the same time, we know that many people suffer from overnutrition. Likewise, we must be alert to the lack of information, but we should also be alert to the excess of inappropriate information.
