W2. Wikipedia edits (DSC) - Gyongmin Moon 문경민
While I was clicking the 'Random Article' tab on the left side of the Wikipedia page, searching for an article that I may have some interest or some information so I can edit it, Wikipedia took me to an article named Defense Security Command, which in Korean, called Gimusa(기무사). It was a real coincidence because the troop that I had my military service was it. So, with a slight bit of interest and bitterness in my head and stomach, I read through the article. It didn't take me much time because it wasn't very long.
One surprising thing that I found was that the article was written as if DSC is still on the roll, even though it was dismantled in the year of 2018. So I checked the history of that article and only 4 people edited the article since the incident, and it was just minor changes on contents. So I wrote what I knew about the dismantle incident of DSC, and its reorganization as DSSC. After that, I searched through the internet and cited my paragraph.
I was a little bit shocked by this because even though I knew this is not the Korean Wikipedia, so many people won't be interested in the Korean content as much as we do, and I also knew that not every content can be daily renewed. But 2 years without a major change of recent information in an article was too critical as information. What surprised me was that this kind of article actually does exist and it's not a really rare case. Which means, when people that are not so familiar with Wikipedia, and don't check the history of the article, they may find ancient information as if it is from now. In case of DSC, some foreigners might still think DSC exists, and I think this is a crucial problem for an information page to have. Large amount of information are good, but if they can't be supervised regularly and becomes a wrong information, I think it's worse than no information.
To solve this problem like this, wouldn't it be a good idea to make a tab that links people to articles that haven't been edited for a long period of time? Just like the random article tab, people might find some interesting or well-known articles for them that they could not have remembered.
