W3-2. Reading assignment / ji eun Bang
I learned the history and purpose of
Wikipedia through this chapter.
Jimmy Wales, cofounder of Wikipedia
and its Nupedia progenitor, sent his first message to the Nupedia email list:
“My dream is that someday this encyclopedia will be available for just the cost
of printing to schoolhouses across the world, including ‘3rd world’ countries
that won’t be able to afford widespread internet access for years. the
communication of ideas across national and confessional boundaries; the ability
of individuals, where ever they lived, whatever their social status, to
participate in a universal conversation .
I think Wikipedia is like Utopia on the
Internet. It is a service for information alienation. And it was touching that
Wikipedia was first created to maximize access to information. Jimmy considered
the power of human solidarity important. Also, it took a lot of time for
Wikipedia to be created because it took a lot of effort.
The history recounted in this
chapter speaks to the alluring and enduring notion of an ambitious project of
human knowledge production and dissemination: a universal encyclopedia. And The
reason why Wikipedia took so long to open is because wikis made editing the Web
possible again for many people. In this chapter, we were able to learn the
story of people who struggled to open Wikipedia. Also, they have been
constantly trying.
