Interpedia: the ancestor of Wikipedia
Interpedia was failed, but still I think it is the father of Wikipedia.
Before the internet, people can not get
more information that comes from newspapers and journals. This might be the
only source of information and knowledge. However, the Interpedia project was
started with Micheal Hart’s idea about the net encyclopedia. It is like Wikipedia.
The main point of net encyclopedia and Wikipedia is this: information from
people.
I understand the background of Interpedia. People
used email and Usenet., and some new protocol was developing. I think Rick Gate
tried to take a chance to gather information and knowledge that more than
newspapers and journals. If people could access a big encyclopedia in any country,
why they can not offer their knowledge at home? This is development of
technology.
Of course, I don’t think they are exactly
same. However still their bases are similar. I don’t know if Rick Gate considered
collective intelligence that better than one’s intelligence, but he tried to build
same system structured with Wikipedia.
Now I start to think about possibility. If
we develop Interpedia in another way, not Wikipedia, which system can we build to
‘gather knowledge from people internationally?’ It is question about any different
shape of Wikipedia.
