W3. Reading assignment - Gyongmin Moon, 문경민

1) Summary

If there would be one wish in this world; a wish that mankind has never stopped hoping for, it would probably: A world that no one gets hurt and just be happy. Childish, yet so hard to achieve, many of us might agree about its presence in our mind, but again, we also know that all of us would be shaking our heads against it becoming real. Everyone has a different aspect, life, and everything. In this world understanding a single person is hard enough for an individual. But we don't have to be disappointed by it because it's impossible for now. If we stop wanting it, then that will be the moment when it really becomes just a wish, not a destination. There could be many ways to arrive there, and the vision of Wikipedia is also headed for the destination of this wish. Wikipedia contains many yearnings from many people. It didn't just pop up from nowhere. Instead, it has slowly, yet certainly been built through many trials and errors, changes by era-status, and finally in its current form. This doesn't mean that Wikipedia is perfect, it will change again as time goes by. But one thing that doesn't change is that, Wikipedia is for humans'. This does mean it's free, and everyone is available to edit, but further on, Wikipedia is to serve greater goods on mankind's development. The goal of Wikipedia is all kinds of information to all kinds of people in its own qualities and norms. But this is not an ultimate goal. By doing so, people will learn about different people, the people they might never have met or even understand the way of thinking. Through learning by text, they will have a chance of understanding their life. And by this understanding, there could be the slightest chance for solving the global problems, that we all know it needs to be solved, but we don't know how-to, because we can't understand why others are doing what they're doing right now.

2) Learned

It was the first time, I think for all of us, to see the actual history of Wikipedia, and what was the dream that was kept in it. Though it has gone through a long period of time, the whole idea of this chapter was about 'us' becoming better beings through understanding each other. This word, understanding really thundered in my mind. We always say "I understand." to others so easily. But really, can we understand each other? If so, what makes this world's problems so complicated? Why is there a war if we can just understand each other by talking about stances of themselves? To be honest, we are not understanding anyone. How could we? There isn't a single person in this world that has lived exactly the same time as me, you, or anyone. Unless we physically metastasize all of our memories and experiences to others, the real term of 'understanding' isn't really happening. Saying "I understand" is just self-satisfaction of the speaker and conceit of the hearer, which is derived from our greed to be out of disharmony of relationship. Wikipedia wanted to solve this tiring and knotty problem by giving "the sum of all human knowledge to every single human being on this planet". And this is not just Wikipedia's hope. It's the hope of many people from past history. While reading I remembered this saying of Albert Einstein, "Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved through understanding."

3) Question

As I mentioned above, I believe there are many other ways for us to solve the problems we are facing right now. What could be a way for us to make this world 'that no one gets hurt, and just be happy'?
