W3. Understanding Wikipedia (Readings1, 2) - Youngryun,Chun

  • Summary

Wikipedia has been used to compete and conquer other ethnic groups. It was called "neo-Nazi attack". Wikipedia functions as access, cost, and collabation.
Wikipedia's encyclopedia has content in many languages and is a successful model used by many people.
The characteristic of Wikipedia is that it enables social cohesion. Wikipedia is also famous for being editable by everyone. In addition, many people are talking and forming communities in channels and chat rooms that can communicate in Wikipedia. Wikipedia has articles that contain diverse cultures and customs as well as policies and academic articles. These contents play an important role in how people understand.

‘Index card and microfilm’ and ‘digital computers and networks’ played a major role in Wikipedia's worldwide spread. Through many projects and interpedia studies, research was conducted on the encyclopedia, which was freely accessible. Although the Interpedia study was not successful, the concept of an encyclopedia through the Internet was known to people. The success of Wikipedia, an encyclopedia on web, has been written in turn by studies such as Nupedid and GNUPedia/GNE. These Wikipedia plays a role in predicting the future and studying the past.

  • What was interesting /What did you learn

It seems like Wikipedia's functions are simple, but I learned that it was done through so many people's efforts and research. Also, after studying Wikipedia last week, I wanted to learn about the history of Wikipedia, so today's reading played a good role.
I was also curious about how Wikipedia affects culture at first week. Through this reading, many people around the world could learn about culture by making article about their culture and customs. I knowed that Wikipedia is playing more roles than it looks.

  • Discussion or Question

So how do we effectively use Wikipedia's capabilities? There is a lot of content, but we can't use it because we don't know how to use them. I want to study by reading relatively easy-to-read and interesting articles such as customs as well as academic articles.

  1. I think your post is always well-organized! I like your post. By the way, I also learned same thing like you've learned from the arlticles. It is about the Wikipedia's history! I thought that Wikipedia is just simple and easy-made website. But I was wrong. There were so many people's efforts and had its own history.
