W4. Understanding Wikipedia (Reading assignment) - Youngryun, Chun
1) Summary
Wikipedia makes the right use of collaborative culture. However, there is a weakness to the collaborative culture that something wrong can be tolerated. These weakness can be changed through efforts to look critically at and solve problems. Wikipedia has a positive future because it can be solved through people's discussion. To solve this problem, a neutral perspective of people using Wikipedia is important. There are also patient, civility, and humor. This helps correct the mistakes.
Wikipedia has many advantages as an open encyclopedia, but there is a possibility that good users will be left out by problematic users. To solve this, it is helpful to maintain Transparency and Integrity. It is also important not to discriminate and to interfere with others' things. There are four examples of efforts to solve this problem of openness; Finding someone who can actually edit, Interfacing with the Outside World, Bureaucratization, Enclaves and Gender.
2) Learned
I learned to the problems that an open encyclopedia accompanies. I already recognized that inaccurate information can be generated, it was interesting that good users were left out by problematic users. I think this problem occurs because it is not edited face-to-face. We should be careful about this when editing Wikipedia.
3) Discussion
As I saw in a reading earlier, I wonder how many Wikipedia users actually edit. Also, in my case, I use Wikipedia to get information, and I want to know why the actual editor adds information to Wikipedia.

I felt it while editing Wikipedia through this class, but editing it is more interesting than I thought. Of course, I may be strange, but isn't it because there are so many people like this that I'm now Wikipedia?
ReplyDeleteHi i think your post is so interesting! And I've never known that Wiki's concerns like balance between openness and closeness until I read this chapter 4. I thought same thing with you. it is the problem from too much openness. How can we improve this kind of problem?
