W5. Who do you think edits Wikipedia? - CAI MUBO

I think anyone can edit Wikipedia, but the people who edit the most should be people who have different interests in this area.


Wikipedia knows its philosophy and essential purpose, and ensures that its words and deeds are in line with this philosophy. What makes a product powerful is not its power, but culture.


The Wikipedia homepage reads: "You" is the author of Wikipedia. Everyone can contribute to this encyclopedia. Indeed, in the eyes of most people, the formation of this huge amount of information system stems from the joint efforts of many "smart guys"-hundreds of thousands of people continuously for each entry here "Add bricks and tiles". The huge amount of information Wikipedia has today comes from the accumulation of wisdom of many "Wikipedias".


Jimmy Welsh, the founder of Wikipedia, told us a completely opposite answer. In Wales' view, most of the content of Wikipedia entries is written by a core user team of only a few hundred people. "This organization is no different from other traditional organizations." Wales said, "I know everyone in this organization, and they know each other."


Are these hundreds of people really writing all the entries of Wikipedia? To confirm this, Wales introduced an experiment he once did: he counted the number of edits to all entries on the Wikipedia website, hoping to find out in this way who the "who" was. Most edits. "I look forward to such a conclusion. Just like other encyclopedia websites, 20% of users edited 80% of the entries." However, the conclusion of the experiment is very different from his assumptions. In fact, more than 50% of the edits to all entries originated from 0.7% of Wikipedia registered users. Edited 73.4% of all entries, from the most active 2% of Wikipedia users. The remaining 25% of the edits were made by other users with minor changes like spelling changes. Wales has stated more than once in public that these more than 500 core registered users are the backbone of writing Wikipedia entries.


Even if one day, "writers" leave it, Wikipedia will not depreciate because of it, people pay more attention to the content of Wikipedia.

Summary Wikipedia is a multilingual online encyclopedia as an collaboration project. It isn't made by one people. Anyone can write and share information. It is maintained by non profit organizations. It is the largest and most popular  general reference work on the World Wide Web, and is one of the 20 most popular websites. Diverse information can be found in encyclopedia. Interesting point Wikipedia is made by group. All people in group can share their own information. Not only expert, but also anyone who have interest in topic, they can participate in make dictionary. I had a negative opinion about this in past, because this can affect on accuracy of information.
