W6. Reading assignment - Gyongmin Moon, 문경민
1)Summary
Wikipedia has become more influential in today's societies. As Wikipedia becomes to be containing more reliable sources, people tend to believe that information in Wikipedia is the standard of the real world around them. The perspective of this phenomenon differs as the generation and people's norms change. Sometimes, it is criticized because it makes people think that an encyclopedic platform is essential to their everyday life, sometimes it is praised for its opportunity given to people who read rich the information in it. We still do not know whether we should abandon it, or keep it by developing it in a better way. But what we do know is that people's longing for this kind of instrument has long been with us for many centuries and it won't disappear in a day or two. But can it really exist in a way that it 'pillars' about itself? Can it stay at a neutral point of view? Can it have good faith collaboration all the time? After all, it is a work of over a million people over a long period of time. Can it actually succeed and achieve its vision? This, is what we can not know for sure unless we can time travel to the future. But, many Wikipedians and Wikipedia itself knows that Wikipedia is an imperfect creation, and admits the fact that it has to, and it will change. What we shouldn't do is surprising the worst future with unprecise prediction. What we should do is keep on the work, and fix what is wrong, and do not repeat it again. Then, who knows what wonderful thing would happen? That's the exciting part of every work in this world.
2) Learned
I've learned that Wikipedia has more influence over people than I thought it would have. Maybe it's because in Korea we are not familiar with Wikipedia. But, if we think of other encyclopedic platforms in Korea, such as the Naver Encyclopedia, I think many people trust and rely on the information suggested there. This could be the weakness of today's people. We don't feel the need to search for the information that we need. We are trained by ourselves to just type it on the internet.
3) Discussion
From my perspective, we humans still have indiscreet intelligence and ego. We question others even with a mere trifle, and this makes us unable to believe nor understand each other. Like this, we are always denied by others and we always deny others in some way. This chance of being denied makes us fear each other. But we need to know that a world without others' denial means a world of just oneself, and no other existence. Being denied; being different is a scary thing. But it is also evidence of you not being alone. In conclusion, an agreement would make us happier than a denial that is for sure. But, we cannot always get an agreement with other people. This is the natural way of today's world. So, I think receiving a denial can be an obstacle, but not trouble. Think about it, how boring would a world be if there is no one responding to your action?
