WK 5.2 The Benevolent Dictator - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

In the reading it starts with the example of a “Neo-Nazi” dictator, it didn’t say when it exactly happened but I think it was during World War I and II. This dictator just did what he wanted to do, locking articles down, ban people, and protecting their own reputation and integrity. Actually, for someone to have that much power by a community founder is not unique to Wikipedia. Such leaders are often found in a project around, which a community develops, or otherwise emerge from a leaderless context by way of merit. However, Wikipedia is not an anarchy, democracy, nor a monarchy. Because of the voluntary and meritocratic character of open content communities it is not surprising that leaders are expected to lead by example as their very leadership is founded upon exemplary behavior. This means that leadership emerges through action rather than appointment. The prominent leader of an open content community is sometimes characterizing as a benevolent dictator. This is a variation on a tradition in online communities of referring to a minority with disproportionate influence. The role of the “Benevolent dictator” completes this ironic turn while also indicating genuine respect.

What is new to me, is that back in the days, all users of Wikipedia acted as administrators and in principle they still should. But now, any user can behave as if they are an administrator, provided that they do not falsely claim to be one, even if they have not been given the extra administrative functions. Users doing so are more likely to be nominated as full administrators by members of the community and more likely to be chosen when they are finally nominated.

Do you think that having an administrator status is something to be proud of? Like you’d feel to earn a trophy?

  1. Well, I think the thrill of getting authority is a natural instinct of human. The superiority compared to other people means a higher chance to survive, even if it is just in the digital platform. Back when I was in the elementary school, I played the game called Roblox, and I was a admin in a map. I could do whatever I want, and people begged for my 'mercy' lol. So, basically, I'm not sure whether it would be something to be proud of, but I think it does certainly make me happy having those thrones on my head. (But I don't agree one people being a dictator with they're overwhelming power. Just so you'd know.:))
