W7) Good Faith Collaboration - Hyojung Park

The book deals with Wikipedia's beginning and development process, systems, conflicts and cooperation among users, and culture. While reading, I was surprised and interested by the unexpected contents.

The most interesting part was the conflict between Wikipedia users and how they handled it. In fact, most Internet sites, as well as Wikipedia, are full of attack toward each other because of their anonymity. Discussion in Wikipedia can lead to more violent debates, especially as people with different views on a particular event will discuss it. However, Wikipedia users used various methods such as poll or mediators to prevent the impact of excessive overheating of the debate. It was amazing that users themselves supported peaceful cooperation on anonymous sites that were prone to attack each other, and that it had become Wikipedia's culture. I felt that the Good Faith Collaboration of  Wikipedia users was an example of proving that the world could go towards goodness.

And it was also surprising that Wikipedia's articles, made by Good Faith Collaboration, were unexpectedly reliable. In fact, I didn't think Wikipedia's articles were very reliable because anyone could modify them.
However, I didn't realize that "Anyone" included a sincere person in the edit of the article. Of course, malicious person can spoil an article, but again someone with good faith correct it, and they all remain on record.

Reading this book, I learned in detail how the repository of knowledge shared by people around the world is created and how its members collaborate. Thanks to this, I felt more heavier responsibility for the article I edit and could take a serious attitude.

  1. I also found it interesting that it was made by a group of well-meaning people. It was doubtful that "anyone" could modify Wikipedia, which means people who are good at editing. I was also able to realize this feature and take a serious attitude toward editing articles. We must not forget that we are our well-intentioned editors when editing articles.
