W9. Wikipedia culture & Wikipedia in culture
Wikipedia is a website of information, an
important example of collective intelligence, and has become a new culture
beyond just encyclopedia. As we read in Wikipedia cultures:meetup page, so many groups are connected in Wikipedia. Also there are tons of word that teach us. In Western culture, people follow the openness of
Wikipedia, or criticize, and compare it to something else: for example, their
own intelligence. The characters from TV shows and dramas sometimes quote or
use Wikipedia. In the book, criticism about Wikipedia appears.
The word that means Wikipedia as “culture”
is probably ‘Wikiality’, and it was made by Stephen Colbert in satirical comedy
show “Colbert Report” in 2006. But in fact, Stephen recommended doing negative
things to Wikipedia, and in the end, articles about Wikipedia’s elephants and
Africa turned inaccurate. Not only this case. Wikipedia has permeated culture
deeply enough to be found in any cultural context, in politics, in comedy
materials, in food information sources.
As we can see, in these examples, Wikipedia
is not just an encyclopedia. As I realized in the early classes of Collective
intelligence, Wikipedia is a huge group that its member from around the world
collaborate and create works in democratic way. There are rules needed to
generate information, there are discussions about these rules, and places to
help each other. There is no criticism of others for personal benefit or trying
to make someone opinion leader. In Wikipedia, everyone works personally but
cooperates if necessary.
It sounds strange to me. For example, if
Wikipedia is considered as a village, every village resident (Wikipedia
editors) can live in the same house, eat the same meal, focus on their
missions, and sometimes ask for help or help others. If there is a project,
people come to participate in it. Some people do not. But no one blames them. This
co-operation comes from residents’ interest, and while there is no obligation
or responsibility to work (writing articles), but the village becomes abundance.
(There are more and more articles.)
And there is my question; if we say Wikipedia
is a culture that influence others like Pop-culture, how we develop it for less
critics?
