WK 2.1 Why do you think Wikipedia is becoming more accepted? - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Over the past ten years, Wikipedia has made an increasingly revolution in web history. It is now the biggest source of knowledge on the internet. Competitors like Brittanica have almost disappeared, just like the printed versions of encyclopedias. Wikipedia is known as an open source for volunteers who can edit articles on Wiki to spread their knowledge, and information to other people. Open source can be defined as the free and open creation to show your work. Furthermore, it is also important to know that Wikipedia is a foundation and therefore has no profit motive. This is very important in order to secure contributions from people. If it wasn’t a foundation, people may be less likely to contribute to Wikipedia, because nobody wants a company to make money using their free subscription fees. However, because it is an open source, it is difficult to guarantee the quality of the articles. But Wikipedia has found something to check this, Wikipedia has found millions of ‘volunteers’ (t...

WK 2.2. What is Wikipedia? - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Wikipedia was founded in 2011 by Jimmy Wales and is now available in more than 300 languages and it is worldwide used to do online searching. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia written by volunteers. The name is divided in “Wiki” and “Encyclopedia”. A Wiki is a website that can be edited by any visitor. The information can be freely viewed and edited by anyone. In this way, the open character ensures that the information available on Wikipedia continues to increase. However, because everyone can edit a Wiki, the articles cannot be guaranteed with true facts/information. Wikipedia trust their community/volunteers that they check their work themselves. Whoever wants to edit must follow a strict guideline when writing articles. This includes that articles must be objective and that no copyrights may be infringed. I find it interesting that a Wiki is technically a “group project” because many people are editing it together, without exactly knowing that more people have been writing. ...

WK 2. Reading - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Wikipedia made a historical evolution in our society. Ten years ago, no one -including the founder- would have thought that Wikipedia would be the biggest web research of all time. According to the reading, Wikipedia has come to define the very best web searching in an ethics of our economy and society. Scientists have spent a lot of time understanding the growth of Wikipedia, and put specifically details in important books that they have been written to understand this source production. One of these Scientists is Joseph M. Reagle Jr. who started gaining interest in Wikipedia after he read the fractious narcissism that occurs on blogs, and became increasingly intrigued by the efforts of those individuals, who were writing on Wikipedia. As is it made it clear in this reading, I learned that technology has played an important role in inspiring the vision of a universal encyclopedia. Which in addition to inspiration, network technology and the related collaboration techniques can en...

W2-2. What is Wikipedia? / ji eun Bang

1) summary Wikipedia is "online anenclopedia." Wikipedia is the sixth most visited website in the world. But it took about 20 years to grow so big. Wikipedia is defined as the best not only in the Internet but also in the ethics of economy and commutiny. "Collective community" is similar to democracy. Because, free and democratically, they make continuous invitations to people. Even an amateur who is not an expert can participate if he or she is passionate about what he or she is most interested in. In other words, Wikipedia is the result of collaboration. When many ideas come together, people's various skills, thoughts, and personalities can be complemented by each other. 2) interesting I was very interesting that the Wikipedia Foundation does not own the copyright and that the copyright on all documents belongs to each author. Therefore, Wikipedia can be used for free, either non-profit or for-profit purposes. No one has to pay. Therefore, the volunteers...

W2-1. Why do you think Wikipedia is becoming more acccepted? / ji eun Bang

Why do you think Wikipedia is becoming more acccepted? Wikipedia will become more and more advanced. The biggest advantage of Wikipedia is that it has no commercial advertising and is supported by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation. Also, as of this year, it has been translated into more than 300 languages and more than 40 million writings.  What is the unique feature of Wikipedia that it will develop more rapidly? First of all, the biggest feature is that everyone has the characteristics of collective intelligence to participate in editing and managing. This is a strong advantage over other websites. But is Wikipedia very unreliable?  It's not. Because Wikipedia's documents are constantly revised and constantly reviewed by administrators. Wikipedia users also engage in discussions that share interests through offline meetings. The Wikipedia Foundation also supports user groups from all over the world to revitalize the project. I think Wikipedia is the only website li...

W2) Reading assignment - Hyojung Park

-Summary Wikipedia is a collaborative community in which people around the world freely share a variety of knowledge. The author was interested in this innovative feature of Wikipedia and studied it. We can find plenty of arguments at Wikipedia, but the intention and spirit of the discussion in Wikipedia is quite different from other communities.  When the author working at the W3C, he saw the varied personalities of his peers complemented each other and yielded new solutions that go beyond the level of individuals. He thought the discussion in Wikipedia is similar with it.   -Interesting Point The author's opinion of the discussion in Wikipedia reminds me of a group project. Solution comes out much better when various opinions are gathered than those of one person. Arguments are tiring, but I think listening to and thinking about different opinions broadens the range of thoughts. -Discussion Wikipedia is a site that's been through the hands of many peopl...

WK 1. Why are you taking this class? - Hanane Ben abdeslam

Since I started my study “Communication” in The Netherlands, I was more interested in the developments of our society instead of putting a brand on the market. But unfortunately, I couldn’t specialize in this area, so when I saw this course on the list, I knew that I had to take this course. The world is constantly changing. In recent decades our society has developed from a homogenous, orderly and stable society to a society with enormous variety and diversity. This means what is necessary for society, for the groups of people who are part of it. Beside getting more interested in the society, I also want to understand more of someone’s perspective of a situation, person, idea and others. To discuss this with my fellow students, I really wonder how they think of a topic and what their opinion is. That’s why I like to discuss things with people because everyone has their own point of view. Last but not least, I also find the “Wikipedia” assignment really interesting and, that we wo...

W2. What is Wikipedia- CAI MUBO

Summary: Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia project. It is characterized by free content and free editing. It is the largest and most popular reference book on the global network, ranking the top 10 most popular websites in the world. Because Wikipedia can quickly sort out information related to recent events, and anyone can deeply sort out the data content, many people gradually regard Wikipedia as a news source. Interesting point: I was interested in many of the information on Wikipedia is made by people who advocate popular culture and other things to write their favorite projects, which means that in many cases, the website is very vulnerable to human sabotage for various reasons, even if some reports prove that many items can be easily recovered after being damaged, but Wikipedia still contains large Unconfirmed or contradictory information. Discussion: If anyone can edit the  Wikipedia , how to determine the accuracy?

WK 1.2 Wikipedia: reliable sources - Hanane Ben abdeslam

According to the reading, articles on Wikipedia should base on reliable sources. Reliable sources mean that the information in articles come from sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. However, in the reading it says that the word “source” has three related meanings: the piece of work itself, the creator of the work and the publisher of the work. Three similar things that you mostly see coming back in an article.  Before reading the article, I didn’t know that every article on Wikipedia has to follow a guideline to become a reliable source. This means to cite all information you add to articles, to be sure all information is verifiable, and not to include original research in your additions. If you get known for being a reliable source, it is more likely that your edits will be trusted. After the reading I know that every article has to have reliable sources, but we can gain so many data and information from different sources, so who knows if these sourc...

W2. extra credit: How organization use Wiki? / Dayoung Ryu 류다영

There are only few organizations use Wiki for some reasons, because people think using or utilizing Wiki is quite inappropriate. In collective intelligence class, we work on Wiki, but it Is hard to cite Wikipedia for my report, work, and thesis. We know that Wikipedia has proper references but still references from books, academic journals, and official web pages. However, there is a project to utilize Wiki. The thesis from Korean Cultural Convergence Society suggests writing course of humanities departments with Wiki. In this thesis, we can read what is digital humanity education and possibility of Wiki to connect education and research areas. ( http://scholar.dkyobobook.co.kr.access.hanyang.ac.kr/searchDetail.laf?barcode=4010027479356# ) In this case, the author says that through Content of key words of Archeology lecture, she could check again about educational effect of Wiki. The lecture divided four steps, and each step has main work theme that is ‘finding classic genre...

W2. reading articles. / Dayoung Ryu, 류다영

Summary: Jimmy Wales has founded Wikipedia and Joseph Reagle contributed a lot. Wikipedia is a community, but it does not help us that ‘sharing knowledge for everyone’, but still work for ‘making people depend on this social knowledge asset globally.’ A project like this type seemed unrealistic thing few years before. So many people work collaboratively for Wikipedia, and still there is a lot of things to learn, because Wikipedia does not teach any lesson. It a social protocol, and it is only amount of knowledge. The people who wrote article know this fact.   Interesting: It was interesting that the writer of preface was tired of blog posters, who are in narcissism. A blogger just writes his opinion on his blog. It is not journalism or article. It’s so far from collective intelligence. But in Korea, people think bloggers have powerful influencers on internet. They have millions of neighbors of their blogs, and sometimes they criticize some product. They effect on sales of ...

Week 2 | Why is Wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed contries? | Lee Jaeseong

Image
Namuwiki, the most document-rich Wiki in Korea Source :  https://images.app.goo.gl/xypc7eRguBYuz6Rv7 Why is Wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed contries? The reason Wikipedia is not as popular as other advanced countries in Korea is because there are alternative sites in Korea. There are currently about 490,000 Wikipedia sites in Korean, but there are as many as 2.7 million Namuwiki sites. Namuwiki is also part of the Wiki project. The reason why Namuwiki is more popular than Wikipedia in our country is that the amount is huge in many documents. Also, it is easier to edit and has more functions than Wikipedia. In addition, portal sites such as Naver and Daum are giving more information than Google. Under these circumstances, a variety of information can be obtained from various channels, even if the number of documents is small and unkind Wikipedia is not required.

Week 2 | Reading | Lee Jaeseong

1. Summary Ten years ago, even founder Jimmy Wales thought Wikipedia was an impossible content. However, today's Wikipedia has grown into a worldwide website. Wikipedia's development was largely attributed to the "collective community." Wikipedia's collaboration creates social benefits by millions of people around the world. The project began with the goal of "a world in every single human being can free share in the sum of all knowledge." There are relativistic few organises that inspirational fix, flaws not without standing. Very new return that after a serious failure. These values one installation. Joseph Reagle called Wikipedia a web-based open content book. Wikipedia plays a major role in references to primary or secondary sources. The act of making Wikipedia is cumulative, interactive and no different from making books. 2. Interesting Point I was intrigued by the people who founded this small book, which was made of the "Collect...

W2. What is Wikipedia - Seungju Lee

Summary Wikipedia is a multilingual online encyclopedia as an collaboration project. It isn't made by one people. Anyone can write and share information. It is maintained by non profit organizations. It is the largest and most popular  general reference work on the World Wide Web, and is one of the 20 most popular websites. Diverse information can be found in encyclopedia. Interesting point Wikipedia is made by group. All people in group can share their own information. Not only expert, but also anyone who have interest in topic, they can participate in make dictionary. I had a negative opinion about this in past, because this can affect on accuracy of information. But, after I realized that  this is "collaboration" project, many people can give a feedback to writers who post wrong information. So I could change my mind that that kind of feedback make good circulation on advance of wikipedia. And also it is collaboration project,  so I think variety of informat...

W1-2. Wikipedia: Reliable sources / ji eun Bang

1)Summary Wikipedia should have clear sources and contain both the majority or significant minority opinions. There are three factors that affect reliability- the works themselves, authors, and publishers of works Reliability depends on the situation. The requirement for the reliability of publication should be true and many people should analyze legal issues and investigate the writing. Old data can be inaccurate. As time goes by, new theories come out in science or academic fields, vocabulary changes, or trends change in such areas as politics and fashion.  Therefore, the latest data should be applied. Also, articles should use reliable things such as papers and textbooks. The author's identity must be correct. Because experts' opinions are reliable and reflect important views. 2)interesting   I am most interested in the fact that Wikipedia articles don't have to be biased or objective. Sometimes information about different perspectives, not neutral, can also b...

W2. What is Wikipedia? / Yerim Han , 한예림

*summary Wikipedia was founded 10 years ago by Jimmy Wales and is one of the great websites today. Wikipedia's nuclear ship is a "collaborative community." It is more powerful than any democracy. Wikipedia is a collaborative community. Such cooperation takes place within a culture or norm, driven by the principles that communities engage in and fight, and is defined through the struggle. This "cooperation" creates social benefits that countless people all over the world rely on. *interesting / learning point I've thought of Wikipedia as a community that has just been created. I was surprised that it was a 10-year-old community. *discussion Is there a community in Korea that can share ideas like Wikipedia?

W2. Why do you think Wikipedia is becoming more acccepted? / Yerim Han

I think one of the reasons Wikipedia is more accepted is "Everyone has easy access." Wikipedia is a great place for people around the world to access and to share their thoughts. It also has more accurate information than other sites and is also quick to update new information. It seems that the various topics in one category are well organized, and it is easy to access relevant information directly through another hyperlink in one information.

W2. What is Wikipedia-Woojin Jeong

Summary Those readings are about the book about Wikipedia and Wikipedia itself. And those readings contain the process in which the author of the book made the book. Wikipedia has not got much attention for quite a long time from the start.  Such Wikipedia is now the best collaborative encyclopedia with the enormous efforts of many scholars and people. Now people won't be able to solve curiosity without Wikipedia. To understand this rise of Wikipedia, contributions from various disciplines are needed. But what is needed most is ethnographies. In addition, there are many restrictions in the process of other books being published and read. However, Wikipedia is an open source and really helpful to anyone who accesses to it. Interesting I was interested in there are some people who really have interests about Wikipedia and ended up published a book which is all about how Wikipedia became today's one of top encyclopedias. Discussion or question I wonder about deep histor...

W2. Wikipedia edits (DSC) - Gyongmin Moon 문경민

While I was clicking the 'Random Article' tab on the left side of the Wikipedia page, searching for an article that I may have some interest or some information so I can edit it, Wikipedia took me to an article named Defense Security Command , which in Korean, called Gimusa(기무사). It was a real coincidence because the troop that I had my military service was it. So, with a slight bit of interest and bitterness in my head and stomach, I read through the article. It didn't take me much time because it wasn't very long. One surprising thing that I found was that the article was written as if DSC is still on the roll, even though it was dismantled in the year of 2018. So I checked the history of that article and only 4 people edited the article since the incident, and it was just minor changes on contents. So I wrote what I knew about the dismantle incident of DSC, and its reorganization as DSSC. After that, I searched through the internet and cited my paragraph. I was a...

W2. What is Wikipedia? / Juhee Cha

After reading http://reagle.org/joseph/2010/gfc/foreward.html http://reagle.org/joseph/2010/gfc/preface-web.html http://reagle.org/joseph/2010/gfc/preface.html *Summary Wikipedia is a collaborative community that can freely and voluntarily make changes to the world. empower people to a wide The people who share knowledge here are not for the sake of money but for the people who love knowledge sharing itself. The data that you normally seek for knowledge is limited. These materials are difficult to produce and logically technical. But Wikipedia makes those processes simple. Wikipedia goes through the process of discussing drafts, sending comments, pointing out what is missing, and presenting ideas. *Interesting Point There was also definitely a negative perception of the Internet dictionary before taking the class. The biggest reason for this was that the public, not the 'experts', could modify it. But rather, after learning about Wikipedia's principles, I changed m...

The sites that many people visit, the sites that share knowledge in various languages, the sites where many people create community knowledge, and the sites that can influence culture are Wikipedia. I think Wikipedia will be more accommodated in the future. There are many places where Wikipedia creates knowledge. There are people in the country who have various knowledge, such as maps seen in class. It is easier to understand the photos attached in class. I will attach it below.  Wikipedia does not have limited qualifications. Anyone can use a skill that can be modified. The transfer of knowledge is important in our lives. Through collective intelligence, our society can be maintained and developed. I think the power of intelligence is important to maintain and develop the society in which we live. Anyone (without restrictions) will continue to use Wikipedia as a means of creating such intelligence. I think there is also the development of the Internet. We used books a...

W2. What is Wikipedia? - Youngryun, Chun

Summary 1.Readings   Wikipedia is an important role not only in the Internet but also in the economy and society. It plays an innovative role in human history over a relatively small amount of time compared to scholars. Wikipedia is a community made up of many people's practices and collaboration.   Through web edition, people could easily read major sources and papers on the Internet. Also, Because of the development of web edition and free movement, we could simply bring data and see what happened. Translating has also become possible.    The author became interested in Wikipedia, which works acoording to individual efforts, and he began his research. Through one study, he saw that individuals abilities and various skills in group activities produce good results. He said that it is similar to Wikipedia. Also, he says Wikipedia is like making a book by several people.   2. Why Wikipedia? , What is Wikipedia?    Wikipedia, which is also...

W2. Why do you think Wikipedia is becoming more accepted? Gyongmin Moon 문경민

To start with the conclusion, I think it's because as time goes by, the number of people who are familiar with the digital world from their birth is keep on increasing, and the number of people who aren't is decreasing. Since I was born in Korea, I'll explain it with the situation that is ongoing in Korea. South Korea's economy has developed at a significantly fast speed. From the Korean War which was stopped in 1953, it took only about 50 years for S. Korea to become one of the well-living countries in the world. This rapid change affected many parts of the citizens and the media that people accept information has been also affected by it over the past 50 years. In the 1950s, obviously, the information receiving channel that people trust the most was the newspaper and book, since there was hardly a single family with a television in their house. Then it became conventional media, such as television, radio and computer when the year came to the 2000s. Now, as we know...

W2-2. The importance of understanding Wikipedia phenomenon

Wikipedia illustrates the democratization of knowledge. Today, anyone in the world can acquire, share and modify knowledge through Wikipedia. And this is done voluntarily, not for commercial purposes. This is an unprecedented phenomenon. To understand that, it is necessary to understand Wikipedia's unique culture. It was interesting to see Wikipedia as a community. This explanation seems quite accurate. This is because there are very few websites that voluntarily gather many people with various ideas like Wikipedia. And I think understanding Wikipedia is very important for understanding the future of mankind. This is because Wikipedia has changed the perspective of knowledge and learning that has been around for thousands of years. Now we can get quality knowledge if we only have devices and knowledge that can access the Internet. How was it? we had to buy an encyclopedia and it was inconvenient to find information. The Encyclopedia Britannica is priced at $ 1100. However, Wik...

W2. [Citation Needed]! Wikipedian Protesters. - Gyongmin Moon 문경민

Image
What is this comic about? Can you explain it? Citation is a mark you can easily see in Wikipedia and almost every website which claims to have information of approved trustworthy. Because without citation, we might not find any proof that the information that we are reading is a fact, or just a story made up by the writer who is pretending or thinking that he/she is posting up a fact. So, if you find [citation needed] sign next to a paragraph or on the top of the article, it means that the website, or a patrol of Wikipedia is asking the you, if you are the writer, "How can you prove this?". This is a policy strictly applied in Wikipedia because, reliable sources of information are the very core characteristic of Wikipedia's success. If you just ignore this, your article will never be able to reach a good article class. Now, back to the comic. Through web surf research, I found that the above picture is a comic published by popular webcomic ' xkcd'...

W2-1. About someone using that result of collective intelligence for commercial / Dayoung Ryu, 류다영

If a result of collective intelligence is free,  what do you think about someone using that result of collective intelligence for commercial? After we watch the lecture video of ‘Why Wikipedia?’, we all know that Wikipedia is free for everyone. I think the reason how Wikipedia can collect intelligence for free is Wikipedia is supported by Wikimedia Foundation, which is NPO. However, what if there is a group does not have any support foundation? I have thought about this question long time. Nowadays, there are a lot of groups made by only few people to publish, spread, and share their good ideas and ideologies. Let’s says this kind of group named ‘GOOD’. The members of ‘GOOD’ are only four, and they have a nice idea. They try to share this idea with more people, so they make a web page and upload about the idea. People find the web-page of ‘GOOD’. People communicate and develop about the idea. One day, ‘GOOD’ hear a new that a famous company makes something rel...

Week 1-2 | Wikipedia:Reliable sources | Kim Seon Woo

1) Summary  The main feature of the key encyclopedia is that anyone can participate in editing and management. Openness is one of the greatest features of Wikipedia, and in principle, users can create and edit almost any document.  At the same time, however, these strengths are also weak points that are vulnerable to the damage of malicious documents or the inaccurate contents. To compensate for this weakness, the Wikipedia community has established editing rules and regulates the creation and editing of some documents. English Wikipedia requires a login to edit documents of high public interest, and German Wikipedia allows only logged in users to edit all documents.  Wikipedia's documents are constantly being revised by someone. Wikipedia's editing system, MediaWiki, allows users to review document modifications in a variety of ways. Users can check the history of a document to see who modified what and when.  If the change is a malicious document corruption,...

Week 1-1 | Why are you taking this class? | Kim Seon Woo (Revision)

I usually enjoy social media. There are interesting content, but I also saw a lot of content with sociological meaning. However, they only consumed the content and did not reproduce it. With Peter's class, you won't be overlooked anymore. We will try to help more and more people benefit by editing the beneficial and desirable information among the numerous information flooded by SNS. As a first step, I want to work with Peter to discover, edit, and influence people on Wikipedia.  Also I like sociology. In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, traditional sociology will shine in a time when a lot of information is overflowing and confusing people. We must reproduce what we have learned. Peter's class will be the beginning. * The article that should be written on the collective intelligence blog is previously on the Social Development Theory blog. Yes, I post again.

Week 1-2. Wikipedia: Reliable sources - Seungju Lee

1) Summary Wikipedia is consisted of reliable resources. And this article contains explanation of “source” At first, the definition of the source is presented in article. The word “source” is being explained in three related meanings,  the piece of work itself, like the article and book. Second, the creator of the work. The writer and journalist are included in the creator. And last, the publisher of work.  For instance, Random house and Cambridge University Press. The reliability of the source depends on diverse factors, like context, age. And next, this article explain that source have four types. Scholarship, News organizations, Vendor and e-commerce sources, Biased or opinionated sources. On the other hand, questionable sources, sponsored content, self-published sourc es and user generated content aren’t recognized in reliable resources. 2) Interesting point It is impressed that biased or opinionated sources are able to be contained in reliable re...

Week 1-2 | Wikipedia:Reliable sources | Lee Jaeseong

1) Summary Wikipedia should be based on reliable sources. The definition of the source is as follows. 1. The piece of work itself (the article, book) 2. The Creator of the Work (the writer, Journalist) 3. The Publisher of the Work (for example, Random House or Cambridge University Press) All of these sources should be accessible to the public. There are four types of sources. First, the first is scolarship, such as papers and books reviewed by the academic community. The second is an article through the news media. The other two are "Vendor and e-Commerce sources," "Biased or open sources." Sources from widely unrecognized scolarship, sponsor content, or personal web pages are not recognized. Wikipedia depends on what the document represents. In human biography, there should be no content about a living person that has no source or incomplete source. All of Wikipedia's tertiary data is unreliable. It is important that the knowledge is widely ...
